All the fashion magazines are talking about it. It seems that the co-ord style will be very popular this summer. Unfortunately, for many of us, this expression is quite incomprehensible. What do you call the total look or the co-ord look? How do you wear the total look ?
What fashion specialists call the total look or the co-ord look, is the act of coordinating your clothing from head to toe. This means using the same colour, materials and patterns from head to toe. To give you an example, wearing a total denim look consists of wearing trainers, trousers, a shirt, a jacket and a cap, all in denim.
Widely worn into the 1980s, this look was banished from fashion standards in the 1990s. Today, under the leadership of fashion designers from the biggest fashion houses and the most famous influencers, the total look has come back into fashion to the point of becoming this summer's must-have.
We might think at first that some people don't like the total look for aesthetic reasons. However, the explanation must be looked for elsewhere. In fact, on the one hand we have those who have tried the co-ord look and who have realised that matching everything is not necessarily easy. Finding clothes in the same shape, colour and material can be a real headache. Some have been known to commit the famous fashion faux pas. On the other hand, there are those who don't like retro looks, those from our grandparents' time. The idea of matching outfits is a throwback to a time when you couldn't stray from what was conventional. It was really from the 1990s onwards that stylists who had a more modern vision of fashion started to mismatch outfits, giving fashion a sense of rebellion and freedom.
If the total look is so old school, why is it so fashionable this summer ? This is a question with several answers. Firstly, because it' s no longer the artists who make the trend, but the influencers. And influencers love the total look! Secondly, it probably hasn't escaped your notice that 1980s fashion is very much in vogue at the moment. The trend is to bring out all the clothes and accessories that remind us of that era. It is not surprising that matching sets are back on the catwalks bringing with them a vintage touch.
If you want to make a statement with a total look, you have to play the game to the end. There are still too many articles dedicated to this trend featuring photos that have nothing to do with this style. Matching one or two garments doesn't fall into the category of co-ordination. To get a total look you have to match everything or it's pointless. The easiest way to achieve a successful look is to wear outfits with matching shoes. In this way, there is no chance of making a mistake. However, if you decide to create your own total look, you will have to be meticulous in your choices. If you want to wear a white co-ordinated outfit, for example, you will have to be scrupulous in choosing the same white throughout, otherwise you risk making a fashion faux pas. Similarly, if you want to wear leather from head to toe, avoid combining shiny with matt leather.
