Attitude, friendship, skateboarding, surfing, punk and thrash, sunshine, rain, sofas on the sand…last weekend got it all.

To celebrate its late 80’s thrash inspired clothing collection, Volcom came up with a one-of-a-kind skate & surf contest in true old fashion, in the great location of Sopela, Basque Country, on the 18th and 19th of May 2024.

Invited surfers and skaters competed for a 5000€ prize purse during some jams in the water and in the bowl located on the cliff above the beach.

Saturday morning saw perfect rippable ramps in the water with the sun out, and the lineup of locals and international surfers delivered action packed heats.

It was rad to see the mix of seasoned “competitors” together with more alternative guys you don’t see often with a jersey on…

William Aliotti stood out with super creative combos including solid airs and stole best wave and best tricks, while local ripper Markel Bizkar shredded the left into pieces to take the second “best wave” prize…

UK surfers Stanley Norman, Harry Timson and Will Bailey all went flight mode and stomped a few good ones to take some of the best tricks prize purse.

Out of the Surfing & Skateboarding category, stand outs included the stylish Portuguese goblin Lourenço Borges de Sousa, Yael Peña from Tenerife and Californian tourist with flair Josh Giddings; honorable mention to Tom Barthelemy, proving “street skaters” can also rip in the water!

Then everyone moved 100m up the beach to the bowl for the skate session, bbq and more refreshments…after a quick rain shower and enough energy from pumped up participants to dry the whole thing in less than 10 min, the skate jams started.

Instant annihilation of the hips from Izei Villacorta, Robin Bolian and Archi got everyone even more excited, it was all set to be a banger…

Unfortunately, the skies didn’t think the same way and a proper hour of rain got the action moved back to the beach to watch Humans Must Disappear play at the Txiringuito (and get more drinks to celebrate the day).

Meeting was set on the Sunday to run the skate at the indoor UKskatepark, where some killed the hangover with a heated vert ramp session…

Standout in the bowl where Izei Villacorta taking the win together with Hegoa Zabalburu, but also local Larrun Barrenetxea and dutchman Jip Koorevaar with a unique selection of tricks.

A best trick session went down over a pool ladder and the spot got destroyed by almost all, Robin Bolian topped everyone with a massive bs 360 and Archibald Bruno took second with a classy alley oop fs air to name the best ones…

Lourenço De Sousa and Tom Barthelemy showed everyone they master it all with great skate runs in the bowl and took overall cross discipline top honors!

Mario Calleja taking third and poster boy Baptiste Gaud taking fourth…these are the true ones.

They can choose if they compete in both or only one of the comps, but overall cross discipline winners will be cheered properly.

Program will depend on weather forecast but will include:

- A surfing contest: all competitors surf several heats – overall best waves and airs will be rewarded.
- A skateboarding contest at the bowl: all competitors skate in small groups jams including a “presentation” run - overall best impression and best tricks will be rewarded.
- Side challenges
- Live Band & BBQ at the bowl
- Afterparty!
