How to dry clean a cap?

A dirty cap can make your hair greasy. That’s why it’s best to keep it clean. You don’t necessarily need to soak it in water or put it in a washing machine. Dry cleaning is an option for getting it clean without risking damage. You can either do it yourself or leave it to a professional.

Cleaning it yourself

Some caps and hats can be easily damaged when cleaned with water. These include felt caps and cowboy hats. Fedoras and top hats, on the other hand, cannot be dry cleaned.

To dry clean your cap, you’ll need hydrogen peroxide, two cloths and a little cold water. Once you have everything ready, identify any stains on your cap. Use one of the cloths to apply the hydrogen peroxide to the stained areas. Leave it to work for around 30 minutes.

Once the time is up, lightly dampen the second cloth with cold water, then gently rub the areas treated with hydrogen peroxide. Continue using the same gentle motion over the rest of the cap until it looks clean and fresh again. Finally, leave it to air dry for a few minutes. Make sure you keep it out of direct sunlight!

Having it cleaned by a professional

If you’d rather not clean your hat yourself for fear of damaging it, you can take it to a professional.

If necessary, they can use specialist treatments to remove all the stains from your cap. Your cap will need to be reshaped once the cleaning is complete to restore its original shape. Make sure the cleaner you choose has the experience needed to avoid damaging your hat. Avoid having your cap cleaned too frequently, as this could permanently soften the material it’s made from.
