Week 1: The Side Eyes - "Cat Call"
The Side Eyes' origin story is sort of ordinary. "We all met at Burgerama," says bassist Chris.
It's happened a thousand times over, a group of people meet and things just click and next thing they know they've devised a plan to start a band together. It was no different for the members of The Side Eyes explained guitarist Kevin, "... and that's when we wanted to do it... like, we want to do this. We're starting a band,".
That was March of 2015 at Burgerama 4 at The Observatory, a festival with an atmosphere so electrifying who knows how many bands were spawned that day. "It looked very doable. You could see this kinda scene forming. It was really amazing. It really drew me in." remembered Astrid, the band's singer.
The Side Eyes' wild, youthful swagger quickly made them darlings in the Los Angeles underground. And it wasn't long before word of the band made its way back to Sean and Lee at Burger Records, soon finding themselves booked at Burger-a-Go-Go that summer and exactly one year later back at the Observatory set to play one of the seven nights of the 2016 Burger/Observatory anniversary shows.
"We heard about The Side Eyes through Jeff McDonald of one of our all-time favorite bands Redd Kross!" explained Sean.
Now it just so happens that Astrid is the daughter of Jeff and it was the recordings that the band made with Jeff's brother Steve that would eventually become The Side Eyes debut self-titled release on Burger Records. Burger's all about keeping it in the family.
For their contribution to the Cyber Singles Club the band choose to re-record the first song, "Cat Call", from their debut release. Propelled by singer Astrid McDonald's fierce vocal delivery over the muscular fury created from the brotherly band of shredders, Chris and Kevin Devine, and backed by the speedy hands of drummer Nick Arnold, The Side Eyes create a fury fitting for the message... no time spared for stupid cat calls.
In addition to re-recording "Cat Calls", The Side Eyes also laid down four more songs during their session at Volcom Studio and as a little bonus we're including the scorching new as-yet unreleased song "Teenage Jerks" below for you to enjoy in all it's goofy green-screen glory.
